On the first day of April, I had my career appointment with Lu Ann at 4 P.M. When I got there, she was still talking to someone else, but I had no problem at all waiting. I remembered that I hadn’t received my headshots from the Prepare the Fair networking event and asked if I could have them sent in the meantime. The timing worked out perfectly and I was called to come into Lu Ann’s office as soon as I had finished talking to the woman who was going to send me my headshots later!
I remembered how Lu Ann’s office is so nice and “homey” from the scavenger hunt at the beginning of the semester and I was happy to be back. I had a pastry I was eating on my way there and she was kind enough to let me finish it during our meeting.
The first thing she did upon my arrival was print out my resume. She asked me about some of my work experiences and what I hope to do in the future. I told her that I wasn’t quite sure yet, but I realized that I wanted to go into social media strategy along with advocacy for women’s rights on an international level from the online networking event that we had for extra credit. I told her about how unique this event was and how much I enjoyed it even though it was really intimidating at first. I talked to 5 different people who were all very friendly to me and I linked with most of them on LinkedIn after our chat session timed out!
Next, Lu Ann and I looked at my LinkedIn profile, which I had made last semester for my Klein Freshman Seminar. I had almost everything in order to be verified by Klein except for a biography. She said that she liked my profile, and I couldn’t wait to upload the headshot taken at the Prepare the Fair networking event once I received it–which I received shortly after!
Finally, Lu Ann asked if I had any questions for her and I told her that although I had some sort of idea as to what I wanted to do, I still felt lost and I wasn’t sure how I would discover what I wanted. I liked the sound of what I mentioned earlier, but I’m not sure if that’s what I want to dedicate my whole life to. I told her that I had joined Temple TV and I really loved being a part of it and editing film. I was considering MSP because I really like production and media as a whole, but I have already taken a lot of courses for my major and I want to keep my electives open. Lu Ann reassured me that any major in Klein can actually be quite flexible for the same careers and also that I didn’t need to worry about an exact dream job just yet. She also told me that we had a panel for students in my major, Communication and Social Influence, where someone asked the one thing that they were all looking for was someone who could produce film. This made me feel so much better knowing that I could still pursue my major and utilize my skills with the camera and editing.
I would like to thank Lu Ann for helping me with her guidance this semester and I plan to continue coming to see her throughout my four years here at Temple!
